Katie's Place Day Support

Katie’s Place for Persons with Special Needs is a Day Support Program licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and is managed by St. Vincents Home. Katie's Place is a non-profit in the State of Virginia. The mission is to serve adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities in the Roanoke valley. Katie’s place provides opportunities to learn and develop social skills and daily living skills through gardening, cooking, volunteering, community outings, and marketing the crafts that are made in the program.

DAY SUPPORT SERVICES

Social Skills

Engaging in meaningful activities to each individual, participants are learning by observation and interaction. They engage in "small talk" conversations appropriately and are able to stay on topic, maintain eye contact, and follow other rules of social interaction.

Community Gardening

As members of the Roanoke Community Garden Association, Katie's Place participants help in various local community gardens such as Hurt park, planting potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, and several types of herbs.

Relationship Skill Building

SPARK - A participant led social group that meets regularly with volunteers. The individuals plan their own activities, "hang outs," or whatever they choose to do together. Activities might include restaurant nights, bowling, open gym, movie nights, etc.

Volunteering in the Community

Katie's Place participants volunteer with other non-profits and area agencies who have volunteer work to be completed. The participants now volunteer at the YMCA cleaning and other tasks, as requested. In exchange, Katie's Place participants enjoy swimming, playing basketball, and other gym activities at the Y.

Arts and Crafts

Katie's Place participants enjoy crafting and selling their creations. New craft ideas are always appreciated for businesses who may be interested in carrying our crafts. Katie's Place can also prepare wedding and party favors. Just give us a call if you are interested in our crafts!

Activities of Daily Living

We focus on all life areas including laundry, cleaning, household maintenance, and money management. We also concentrate on personal activities of daily living, such as hygiene, grooming, health and wellness, as well as toileting. Katie's Place participants grocery shop, exchange money, sort items, and cook.
